Immigrants leaving

September 1st, 2010

A new study found that illegal immigrants coming into the U.S. is on the decline. Most of the immigrants come from Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Tougher enforcement of the border is playing a part in the decline. Other factors such as the economic downturn are playing a role as well.

Many states have enacted new legislation that makes it harder for illegal aliens to stay in the U.S. the debate over illegal immigration has been going on for years in Washington, and it seems that now the problem is solving itself.

White bark pine

August 22nd, 2010

White bark pine trees play an important role in a bear’s life. The nuts contained within their cones are packed with protein and provide the bears with a few extra pounds before the winter arrives. One problem the bears are having is that beetles are destroying the cones as fast as the trees drop them.

The scarcity of the cones has forced the bears to look elsewhere for food. This has brought them in increasing contact with humans. Bear attacks are on the rise and experts believe there will be more bear attacks than ever this year. Park rangers are trying to ensure the safety of campers and hikers by spreading the word. Beware of bears when out in the woods.

Seeds of Life

March 11th, 2010

Locked away deep inside a very secure vault is the hope of mankind. I’m talking about the “Doomsday” seed vault in Norway. The vault is located in a remote area of Svalbard archipelago. The vault contains over ½ million seeds collected from around the world. It is the largest and most diverse collection in the world.

The intent of the collection is to safeguard the seeds in the case of wars, natural disasters, or other destructive events. It can provide the world with new seeds in the event the supply is lost. There are other seed banks around the world, but we have seen that some of them have been destroyed. I’m glad to know that we are looking toward the future with an eye to prevention.

An embarrassing moment!

February 25th, 2010

Every once in awhile I do something that’s a little bit embarrassing, the other day I went to work and everything was as usual. I went outside on my lunch break as I often do and sat in my truck to read. It was nice and warm out I was soon relaxed.

The next thing I knew, Susan was knocking on my window. She asked if I was going to return to work or sit out here and sleep the day away. I was so embarrassed about the whole thing and had to walk back into work to the cheers and jeers of my co-workers. I guess I’ll have to wait until someone else does something dumb so the heat will be off of me!

Happy Birthday Donna

February 19th, 2010

A friend of mine from the “old neighborhood” is celebrating her birthday today. I gave her a call to wish her a happy birthday and as we talked a bit, I was surprised when she told me that she has been working on a blog, too. So I checked out her blog today and decided to bookmark it so I can read it regularly. I might even subscribe to her RSS feed, but I’m not really sure how all that works.

Anyway, if you happen to be reading this, Donna, I hope you had a wonderful birthday today and I am looking forward to reading your blog.
